How is 2016 going?

Hi there! Glad you’re here.

Today being February 1st, I thought it would be appropriate to check in with you all (and myself) on how 2016 is going so far. Are you making the changes you wanted to make? Doing all the things you had hoped for? If not, it might be because you set too high of expectations and tried to change too many things at once which can leave you feeling defeated, overwhelmed, and like a failure.

I suggest (I’ll be doing this too) the following exercises to reflect on the intentions or goals you set on January 1:

  1. Ask yourself if they are still realistic and worth working on. ​
  1. Break them down and pick one part of the intention or goal to work on for a whole week. (For example: Let’s say your goal for this year was to stop bingeing. Pick out one, tiny habit or baby step that goes along with that such as trying to eat when you’re hungry to work on. Giving yourself this one thing to focus on can help you feel success and continue to move forward and make changes.)
  1. Give yourself credit for the work you’ve been doing so far. There’s no use in beating yourself up for what hasn’t been done. Instead, see what changes HAVE been made and celebrate those. Positive reinforcement sends a signal to your brain that you want to keep feeling that way so you will keep doing things that make you feel good.
  1. Set benchmarks/check ins on your calendar to do this all over again. Maybe on the first of the month each month you have a note in your calendar to remember to give yourself credit, see what changes you’ve made, and to refocus on one baby step in the direction you want to go. Small changes made consistently over time create HUGE transformation.

That’s what I’ll be working on for myself today! Going through the intentions I set, and make sure I’m moving forward by breaking them down into tiny check points!
